Microsoft Expands Intune Cloud-Management Beta

Microsoft expanded the public beta of its Intune remote-management product on Monday, announcing that the offering will be priced at $11 per PC when it goes live in early 2011.

Microsoft originally announced the Intune beta in April, when Microsoft said that it would make the tool available in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico to 1,000 customers. On Monday, Microsoft expanded the region list to France, Germany, Ireland, Spain, the U.K., and Italy, and said that it would not support up to 10,000 customer beta accounts serving at least 5 PCs each.

Intune is a cloud-based remote management system, allowing IT administrators - or, now, partners - to remotely manage a number of client PCs.

"Businesses get a great deal with Windows Intune for several reasons. Because Windows Intune is built on a cloud service, customers and partners can realize the benefits of having a modern PC management and security system without the upfront software licenses, server hardware, and IT labor costs that are required to setup a traditional on-premise solutions," Alex Heaton wrote on the Microsoft blog.

Windows Intune will include the cloud management service with integrated antimalware (AV and antispyware) plus Windows 7 Enterprise upgrade rights, Microsoft said.

Microsoft made the announcement on the first day of its Worldside Partner Conference in Washington D.C., where the company made a number of enterprise-related announcements. However, Microsoft also slipped some consumer disclosures as well, including the first release of Windows 7 SP1 to businesses and the roadmap to future Windows 7 tablets.

Microsoft also announced an appliance based on Windows Azure, which the company will deploy this year in conjunction with eBay. The appliance will include "Windows Azure, Microsoft SQL Azure and a Microsoft-specified configuration of network, storage and server hardware," Microsoft said.

The new beta includes a "Multi-Account Console", which is designed to help partners manage multiple accounts through the single Web-based console, Microsoft said. Alerts, the health of the PC, and updates can all be monitored across all of the PCs a partner or an IT administrator manages, with the ability to filter for urgently needed upgrades or patches.

Ready For A Career Change? Travel The Microsoft Certification Route

Are you dissatisfied with your job? Do you want to find a new one or at least make a move to another department within your company? Do you need certifications in MCSE, MCP and any of those other abbreviations? You need to sit down and decide what career path you wish to take if you want to go the Microsoft Certification route.

First of all, do you have any prior experience in the business world? If so, no matter what you decide to do, whether it is MCSE training or MCP training or anything else, you will be ahead of others with no prior professional expertise. However, if you choose to make a career change that is a complete 180 degrees from what you are doing now, you will have some trouble finding gainful employment without some concrete experience.

For instance, if you are an Administrative Assistant and decide to go for a Microsoft Certified System Engineer, better known as an MCSE, you need to have some practical experience (the basic requirement is about a year of previous experience) under your belt before even starting your MCSE training. How could you go about doing that? You have several options. Find a mentor. Maybe another person within your company who has an MCSE could give you pointers and some on-site knowledge into his job. Volunteering through a nonprofit or some other community organization could net you some valuable experience. Serving as an intern, whether paid or unpaid, is another option.

A volunteer position or an internship also is beneficial for those people with a fresh Microsoft certification but no practical, hands-on experience. Practically every nonprofit organization or community group has computers. Some of them are small groups and others have computer labs (perhaps state-run job placement places) with no budget to hire full-time staff. You have got to think outside the box for ways to gain that practical experience.

Networking mixers or social time is another great idea. You can mingle with professionals in the field you are trying to break into and find out about their internship opportunities. It is the perfect venue in which to sell or market yourself. Check out your local Chamber of Commerce for any local trade organizations in the prospective field as a starting point in this networking endeavor. Many times, you can find out some priceless information about the ins and outs of your potential area of certification. Learning from the experts could be an eye opening experience for you. Heck, you could even change your mind from braving those MCSE boot camps and the seven tests for MCSE exams. Isn’t it better to gain that insight before you spend the time and money?

Once you have completed your certification, whether it is navigating through MCP courses or any other Microsoft certification, be prepared to start from scratch in your new endeavor. Just remember, anything having to do with technology will change again in a year or two, so you have to keep up with new trends and that means continued instruction. As long as you travel the Microsoft route, you’ll be successful.

Review: Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010

Review: Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010
In November, we gave SharePoint 2010 beta a test drive. Now, we put the shipping product through its paces and find that Microsoft has delivered a multi-purpose tool that delivers a bigger bang because of its tight coupling with Office 2010.

Some caveats remain from our first look at SharePoint 2010. It's 64-bit only, so you may need to upgrade your servers. It does not support Internet Explorer 6, so you may want to upgrade to IE8. And to get the full functionality you pretty much need to be running the latest version of other Microsoft products, including Windows Server 2008 R2 and Office 2010.

Our beta test focused on key features such as collaboration, document management, search and business intelligence. This time around, we're digging into customization, integration with Office 2010, social functions, and how metadata can be employed.

For this evaluation, we installed SharePoint 2010 on dedicated quad-core hardware running Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 (64-bit). Clients could access SharePoint sites from a variety of laptops and desktops running Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

Setup is simple. After running the Pre-Upgrade Check utility, and addressing any warnings (such as custom Web Parts), we had no problems moving a SharePoint 2007 server to 2010. Just remember that SharePoint 2010 is 64-bit only.

On the fresh server, the setup – from installing the OS, database, prerequisites, and SharePoint – required about three hours. The setup program automates almost all the work required to install and configure SharePoint, resulting in a successful installation the first time.

Once you're operational, it's worth recapping how the new Web editing capabilities ease customizing, especially for users who are familiar with the ribbon menu of Office 2007. I simply clicked the Edit option in SharePoint's Ribbon area to open the page in edit mode, reformatted text, and immediately saw a live preview of the changes.

Also, Wiki-like syntax cuts time when adding links to other content. For example, just enter '[[List:S' and documents stored in document library folders starting with 'S' will appear in the autocomplete dropdown; then scroll down to the desired document or page you want to link to. Inserting graphics and multimedia is equally straightforward.

I particularly liked the way Web Parts (components that display particular types of information) are now better organized and appear at the top of a page when editing. Simply pick a category, such as Media and Content, and select the Web Part you want to insert into the page.

SharePoint 2007 required detailed knowledge of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to change the look of sites. Now, authorized users can update themes to match your brand – without any programming. I started with one of the many pre-made color and type combinations, and within a few minutes had customized the theme by specifying individual fonts and color hues.

Yet customization goes far beyond look and feel. SharePoint 2010 lets you target any list item, not just complete lists of information. It works like this: First, you create a catalog of rules, groups or memberships. Next, you can define that most any item within the site – from Web Parts to individual documents – will only appear to one of those defined audiences.

Initiative Android and the Google Nexus One

Initiative #2: Android and the Google Nexus One

The Android operating system and the Nexus One smartphone are both part of Google's vision of having wireless devices that aren't tied down to any particular network. In other words, Google wants users to eventually be able to take their favorite devices with them from one carrier to another without having to buy a whole new device Microsoft MCTS Training.

The first part of implementing this vision came in 2007, when Google unveiled its long-awaited Android open-source mobile operating system. At the time of the platform's release, Google said it wanted Android to be a starting point for spurring innovation in developing mobile applications that would give users the same experience surfing the Web on their phone as they currently have on their desktop computers. In the two-plus years since its debut, Android has landed on several high-profile devices, including the Motorola Droid, the HTC myTouch 3G and the Samsung Moment. Now that the Motorola Backflip has debuted on AT&T's network, all four major carriers in the United States now support Android-based devices.

But while Android phones clearly generated a lot of market hype over the past two years, they have also largely been tied to exclusivity agreements that make their use dependent on individual carriers. With this in mind, Google late last year launched its own Nexus One smartphone, which will run on both the T-Mobile and Verizon networks. The Nexus One doesn't, however, mark any intention by Google to get heavily involved in the handset market. Rather, the company is using the Nexus One as a showcase for the Android platform's potential when running on a device that has the most cutting-edge hardware and software available on the market.

Results: By all accounts, Android has been a big hit so far. The number of Android-based devices grew at a rapid clip during the fourth quarter of 2009 and Android phones now account for just over 7% of all smartphones sold in the United States.
As for the Nexus One, we aren't likely to see its full impact until it makes its debut on the Verizon network sometime this spring. However, just because both T-Mobile and Verizon will be supporting the Nexus One, don't think that you can merely cancel your subscription to one of the carriers and bring your device onto another network. Since Verizon uses the CDMA-based EV-DO Rev. A 3G technology and T-Mobile uses the GSM-based HSPA 4G technology, Google has had to design two different Nexus One devices that will be compatible with each network. So basically, don't set your sights on carrier-hopping until Google comes out with a 4G phone that can run on LTE, the GSM-based 4G technology that has been adopted by T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon Microsoft MCITP Certification.

Initiative #3: The experimental broadband network

This could be Google's most audacious project to date, as the company announced last month on its blog that is constructing an experimental fiber network that it says will "deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections."
